About BEES

A Holistic Approach to Elder Wellness

The BEES framework represents the four fundamental pillars of our WIPES program, designed to address the comprehensive needs of seniors—physical, emotional, social, and spiritual.

Each pillar addresses a critical aspect of elder wellbeing. Together, they create a complete support system that ensures our seniors receive the nourishment, activity, security, and social connection they need to thrive in their later years.

Through BEES, we've created a scalable, sustainable model that not only provides immediate care but also empowers seniors to become self-sufficient contributors to their own wellbeing and that of their communities.

B

Bread

Nutritional Foundation for All Elders

B stands for Bread. It emphasizes that all elders regardless of their age, faith, sex, education, or employment must be assured to get a loaf of bread at least 3 times a week.

Why Bread?

Bread is a profound source of energy, easy to access, and has a high safety margin. It matches well with other nutritional foods such as honey, peanut butter, and jelly. Bread can also be easily quantified and measured, making it easy to generalize the impact and determine scalability. In the future, seniors themselves, if capacitated, can manage the production of bread for their own health and also as an income-generating activity for self-support.

E

Exercise

Physical Activity for Every Elder

E stands for Exercise. It emphasizes that all elders, regardless of them being weak in their physique, must get guided and prescribed physical exercise.

Why Exercise?

Exercise boosts body immunity, controls pain, builds stamina, improves self-esteem, enhances ability to self-care, increases appetite, and overall improves quality of life. Even gentle, guided exercises can make a significant difference in the physical and mental wellbeing of seniors.

E

Empowerment

Security and Protection for Elders

E stands for Empowerment. It emphasizes that all elders must be assured security and protection on their health, economic, legal, social, and spiritual issues that affect their wellbeing.

Why Empowerment?

Most elders, due to age and biological changes associated with aging, tend to lose memory. They also become more sensitive psychologically, which affects their spiritual and psychological wellbeing. They become vulnerable to making wrong choices or being scammed. Empowerment ensures they have the support, education, and protection they need to navigate these challenges with dignity and confidence.

S

Soup

Fluid Replacement and Social Connection

S stands for Soup. It emphasizes that all elders must get a bowl of soup first to emphasize the importance of fluid replacement for all seniors. We also emphasize on vegetable soup at least three times a week. It is indeed beyond soup and rather the social interactions and bonds which are built in the event of taking soup.

Why Soup?

Soup provides high nutrients, improves visual ability, improves sleep, improves gastric motility, replenishes water, and provides social interaction. The act of sharing soup creates opportunities for seniors to connect, share stories, and build meaningful relationships that combat isolation and loneliness.

The Power of BEES

The BEES framework represents more than just four letters—it represents a comprehensive, holistic approach to elder care that addresses every dimension of human need. By combining nutrition (Bread), physical activity (Exercise), security and dignity (Empowerment), and social connection (Soup), we create a complete support system for our seniors.

Each pillar reinforces the others. Proper nutrition gives seniors the energy to exercise. Exercise builds confidence and self-esteem. Empowerment ensures they can make informed choices about their health. And social connection through shared meals combats the isolation that so often accompanies aging.

This integrated approach has proven effective in improving the quality of life for seniors in our communities. Through BEES, we're not just providing care—we're creating a model of elder wellness that can be replicated and scaled across Tanzania and beyond.

The beauty of BEES is its simplicity and sustainability. Each component is accessible, measurable, and can be adapted to different contexts and resources. Most importantly, it empowers seniors themselves to become active participants in their own care and even contributors to the wellbeing of their peers.
